Tips to Help Reduce Spam

“Prevention is the best medicine”, so help yourself by preventing your personal e-mail box from being clogged up with spam e-mails.

To block out or reduce spam, here are some Do’s and Don’ts:

The Don’ts

  • Do not give your e-mail address to unfamiliar people or company.
  • Do not respond to spam or one that is suspected to be spam.
  • Do not post your primary e-mail address to online chat rooms, mailing lists and online news groups.
  • Do not use the “Reply or Remove” option. It may be a scam to test validity of e-mail address.
  • Do not click on the “unsubscribe” link in an e-mail message suspected to be spam or is a spam.
  • Do not purchase anything, both online and offline, from companies that send spam or suspected and/or capable to send one.
  • Do not open spam to eliminate chances of spyware attack.
  • Do not use “remove me” websites.
  • Do not give away your primary e-mail address to companies requesting to send you promotional e-mails.

The Do’s

  • Use different e-mail accounts for different purposes to avoid spam jeopardising your primary e-mail account.
  • Unsubscribe service only at organisation’s website to avoid spammers collecting active e-mail addresses.
  • Read e-mail message in plain text where possible to shun from online spying from spammers.
  • Remove your e-mail address from public sphere, e.g., member profiles and directories to stop spammers from mining your e-mail address.
  • Most importantly, install protective software or subscribe to anti-spam service to protect your e-mail account.
