HandHeld
Instructions for unsupported platforms (Handheld computing devices)
Palm Pilot Work-Around
Psion Series 5 Work-Around
Windows CE Work-Around
Note:
These are all unsupported work-around techiques for roaming with hand-held computing devices. Pacnet and iPass are UNABLE to provide any form of technical support or assistance apart from the provision of this page to our users.
PALM PILOT WORK-AROUND
You must make sure that you can connect to Pacnet using the number 5379100.

PSION SERIES 5 WORK-AROUND
Psion New Zealand has created a dialer (also unsupported) for Psion that includes scripts and can be found at http://www.psion.co.nz/helpFiles/series5/ipass.htm
WINDOWS CE WORK-AROUND
iPass does not currently support Windows CE because Windows CE dialers can not implement dial-in scripts and the majority of iPass POPs require the running of scripts after modem negotiation.
The contents of the scripts, however, can be entered manually. There are some users doing this successfully, although we do not recommend that non-technical users attempt this work-around. If you want to try accessing the iPass network via Windows CE, you should first install the iPass Dial Wizard on a Windows 95/98 machine so that you can get the following files:
ipass.ipb
imp-w95.scp
kar-w95.scp
moz-w95.scp
ntt-w95.scp
oze-w95.scp
sci-w95.scp
uun-w95.scp
Normally, these files will be found in the Program FilesiPassiPass Dial Wizard folder.
All files with .scp extension are script files. As stated earlier, most of iPass POPs require the running of one of these files (scripts). POP-specific information is provided in the ipass.ipb phonebook. The contents of the scripts are case sensitive.
An entry from the ipass.ipb may look like the following, with fields separated by |.
108|DZ|213|2|741200|Algiers||104408|sci-w95.scp|S104408/||0|
(You can open *.ipb files with WordPad or similar applications.)
This is the detailed explanation of each field:
INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS code|country code|TAPI country id|area code|phone|city|region|
unique POP id|script file|username prefix|username suffix|flags|price
- First, you will first need to identify the city/state (field 6 & 7) you want to dial into, the POP number (field 3, 4, 5), the prefix to insert in front of the username (field 10), and the script to run after the modem negotiates (field 9). If the prefix and script fields are blank, then they are not required to access that number.
- For example, to connect to the above location from within Algiers, dial 741200. After modem picks up, run through the contents of the sci-w95.scp script and enter in S104408/username@pacific.net.sg with password when called upon to do so by the script.
Once again, this manual way of connection is not easy. iPass delivers full-functioning client dialers for Windows 95/98/NT and Macintosh that transparently handle all required scripting, making connections to the iPass network quick and simple. As we locate appropriate dialer software for handheld platforms, we will build in similar scripting features that will make Windows CE even easier to use as your worldwide computing device.
Macintosh
If you are not using OT/PPP, please click here for instructions on how to use ConfigPPP and FreePPP for roaming.
(Mac iPass Dial Wizard phonebook - Updated 29 Mar 2001 23 AUG 2000)
NOTE:
- The iPass Dial Wizard for Macintosh requires Open Transport and Open Transport/PPP (OT and OT/PPP). If you are using another TCP/IP stack or PPP implementation, you will be unable to use the iPass Dial Wizard. Both OT and OT/PPP can be obtained from Apple.
- You can get Open Transport 1.1.2 from from Apple Computers themselves at their support web site's download page.
- It is highly recommended that you are running System 7.5.3 or newer to support OT and OT/PPP. Please check the Apple Web site in order to determine the exact requirements for your specific system.
- To determine your System Software version:
Go to the Finder, select "About this Macintosh..." or "About this Computer..." from the Apple menu. The dialog will tell you what version of System Software you are running.

Fig 1: Determining the operating system via "About this computer"
You can look in your Control Panels folder to see if you are running OT. Your Control Panels folder is inside your System Folder. If there is a Control Panel called TCP/IP, you are running OT. If there is a Control Panel called MacTCP, you are running the older MacTCP and will need to upgrade to OT.
You can determine if you have OT/PPP installed the same way as checking for OT. Check your Control Panels folder. If there is a control panel called PPP, you have OT/PPP installed. If not, you will need to install OT/PPP.
To determine the version of OT and OT/PPP you are running, open the TCP/IP control panel and select "Get Info" from the File menu. The dialog will tell you the version of OT and the version of OT/PPP that you are running.
Downloading iPass Dial Wizard
The iPass Dial Wizard comes as a StuffIt file. To be able to expand it, you need to have StuffIt Expander from Aladdin System. You can download it from this link http://www.aladdinsys.com/expander/index.html
- Click here to download the file.
- Once the file is downloaded, it will automatically decode and decompress with StuffIt Expander. If it doesn't, you will need to launch StuffIt Expander to decode and decompress the file manually.
- Once the file has been expanded, you can start using it.
Note:
- There are altogether five files ("Read Me First!"; "iPass Dial Wizard 1.0.5b"; "License Agreement"; "POP Database"; and "Country Database") and one sub-folder (Scripts) in the "iPass Dial Wizard 1.0.5b" folder.
- Within the "Scripts" sub-folder, there are seven script files (imp-w95.scp; moz-w95.scp; ntt-w95.scp; oze-w95.scp; sci-w95.scp; uun-w95.scp; voy-w95.scp)
- All of them have to stay within the "iPass Dial Wizard 1.0.5b" folder for the program to operate properly.
Setting up your Mac for iPass

Now that you have the iPass Dial Wizard installed, make a connection to a local iPass number to ensure you are set up successfully.
Updating the iPass Phone Book (Updated 11 October 1999)
The iPass Dial Wizard comes with a default phone book. However it is a good idea to download the latest phone book before leaving for your overseas trip. From time to time, iPass sets up new connection points and remove non-functioning ones. The default phone book that comes with the installer is always the latest.
- To download the latest phone book, please click here.
- Once the file is downloaded, it will automatically decode and decompress with StuffIt Expander. If it doesn't, you will need to launch StuffIt Expander to decode and decompress the file manually.
